The white channel is a separate 3000 K string rather than a mix of colour channels, which is why the warm white looks like a lamp and not like a compromise.
What a 100 cm balloon does in a room
The balloon is the diffuser, so its size sets how soft the light is. At 100 cm the source is large enough that a person standing two metres away is lit from a wide angle, which is what keeps the shadows open and the faces readable.
It is also small enough to move without a second pair of hands. For a marquee, a terrace or a garden, the 100 W unit is the one that goes in the van with everything else rather than in a separate trip.
- Headroom for a 100 cm balloon plus the mast: the fixture needs roughly 2.5 m clear.
- Whether the venue's ceiling or truss can take a 5 kg class fixture.
- The plug and cable run, because a tripod in the middle of a lawn is a trip hazard.
Control that suits an event crew
A 2.4 GHz remote covers colour, brightness and the speed of the dynamic modes, and the button on the housing runs the fixture without the remote. That matters when the remote is in a different case and the venue opens in ten minutes.
For a venue with a lighting desk, the DMX option is the one to specify. It lets the balloon sit inside a programmed scene instead of being operated by hand.
Where it is not enough
A large lawn with a 30 m throw, a stage front that needs a hard key light, or a venue with existing bright lighting. In those cases the 200 W unit or a pair of 100 W units is the answer, not a single head pushed to maximum.
For site work at night, colour is usually the wrong tool: the white tripod heads put out far more usable light per watt.
Before the order
- DMX: specify it at order if a console will run the fixture.
- Balloon: keep a spare, a pierced diffuser takes the unit out of service.
- Wind: IP54 covers splash, not a gale. Bring the mast down if it gusts.
